Inspired by the creative genius of Alice in Wonderland, Willy Wonka, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast, Welcome to Wonderland was a fractured fairy-tale event designed to inspire, entertain and engage a crowd of 800+ sponsors and guests at the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy gala event.
Held in Luna Park’s iconic Big Top, four stories were cleverly woven into a technically impressive gala dinner to raise awareness of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, muscle-wasting diseases that affect young boys. An essential part of the Save Our Sons Foundation’s ongoing fundraising efforts, donations on the night topped $500,000.
Split into four acts, the night was a magical cabaret featuring an impressive number of performers. It opened with an Alice in Wonderland-themed number, led by performers Ben Mingay and Rowena Vilar, followed by an Aladdin rendition from singer-songwriter Paulini Curuenavuli. An aerial silks performance was followed by a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory routinethat featured the smashing of centrepiece cake decorations to reveal yet more sweet treats inside, closing the event.
To achieve the immersive magic this event was designed to deliver, Scope transformed the Big Top into a dark canvas using floor-to-ceiling black drapes. This strategic design choice provided the perfect contrast for three 18-metre projection screens that displayed custom-created animations that flitted across the tent alongside shifting lights and vibrant colours.
To anchor the otherworldly theme, the spatial design featured a striking five-metre-tall fantasy tree surrounded by whimsical installations, including decorative mushrooms, a giant fantasy clock, mirrors, and oversized lollipops, creating a highly popular photo opportunity for guests. The stage was centred around a ‘tea party chic’ setup, crowned by a dramatic overhead installation of bicycles, chandeliers, and floral arrangements suspended from the ceiling.
Every touchpoint was meticulously coordinated from an event management perspective, from the ‘magic’ appearance of golden tickets to a decadent themed menu. The evening’s energy was further elevated by a high-stakes silent auction and raffle. Ultimately, the true success of the night relied on Scope’s technical precision and seamless choreography, perfectly synchronising the complex screen content, room design, and live talent to create a flawless, spectacular experience
